About

Buirgy has an impressive history as a performer. At 16 years old, she performed in the long-running hit musical revue, “A 5-6-7-8.” She auditioned for and was accepted into the prestigious Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Musical Theater Workshop, and then went on to play the principal role of Edith in the first national touring company of The New York Shakespeare Festival’s The Pirates of Penzance alongside Pam Dawber, Andy Gibb, and Jim Belushi. Buirgy also wrote and performed in an original musical called The Story Goes, which played at the Tamarind Theater in Hollywood, CA.

Buirgy started writing songs at the tender age of 10. She performed extensively in Los Angeles clubs including The Troubadour, The Whiskey, At My Place, and Café Largo, first as a solo artist, then as a member of the all-girl band The Riveters and finally as part of the duo, All She Wrote. Her career really took off after winning the prestigious “New Folk” award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. From there she went on to play well-known venues and festivals all across the United States. Buirgy has written, performed, and co-produced three albums as a solo artist. Most recently, she was thrilled to have a song placed in an episode of the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Given her roots in musical theater and the wealth of experience she gathered as a touring singer-songwriter, it made sense that Buirgy would eventually bring her creative skills to filmmaking. For a number of years she has juggled her music career with her role as a Producer at Dreamworks Animation. During her tenure there she has been an Associate Producer on How to Train Your Dragon, the Co-Producer on Kung Fu Panda 2, Producer on HOME, with Rihanna, Jim Parsons, and Steve Martin, and most recently, Producer of the movie Abominable, with Chloe Bennet, Eddie Izzard, and Sarah Paulson, which was released in September 2019. She is a member of the Producers Guild and was accepted into the Motion Picture Academy in 2019.

Looking ahead, Buirgy is very excited to have time to focus on her musical, Evidence, along with several other creative projects she has in the works. She is also really looking forward to playing her songs for audiences again beginning in 2021.

Suzanne’s View: When you’re an artists whose music is steeped in simple acoustic strumming and diary-like lyrics, there’s a danger of becoming too comfortable in a niche that doesn’t demand much more than occasional replication. It’s a challenge for such artists to stay fresh. Quite frankly, most don’t. Fortunately, Suzanne Buirgy did.

We first encountered this Los Angeles folk/rocker via her stellar 1998 recording A Small Word. We were struck by her raw intensity. her lyrics dug deep, while her melodies were unshakeably infectious. Several years later, we still listen to it actively. Albums like that are hard for an artist to top. But that’s exactly what Buirgy does with The View From Here.

Once again, she strives to give the listener more than merely a handful of dewy-eyed tales of love in its various forms and stages. She successfully aims to infuse empathy and honesty in her material. In short, you believe every word that comes out of her mouth. There are moments, actually, when she even seems to be betraying herself, sharing almost too much. The pleading “Undertow” feels more like an internal whisper — the kind of words that you might say to yourself in an emotional moment, but words that you’d never say out loud.

On the flip side, Buirgy also gets in touch with her inner rocker. Although it’s framed by a simple acoustic arrangement, “Simple Things” begs to be fleshed out as a full-tilt electrical anthem. It has a riotous, fist-waving chorus that urges the artists to belt until her vice shreds to a sexy rasp. And speaking of sex, she oozes it on “Experience,” and old-school blues number that will probably explode in a live setting.

The View From Here was produced by Buirgy with Judy Wieder. For more information, check out the artist’s web site (suzannebuirgy.com)

“…If you enjoy contemporary singer-songwriters, then become familiar with Buirgy. Like Minerva from the mind of Zeus, she arrives a full-blown talent.”
